In July 2022, City of Ryde adopted the Green Links Masterplan - a long-term vision for three urban green corridors that support biodiversity, provide active transport routes, and activate open space for our community.

One of these corridors, the Shrimptons Creek Green Link, connects Macquarie Park and West Ryde through pedestrian and cycle paths. As part of its implementation, Council is upgrading active transport links in and around Carara Reserve and Benson Lane, West Ryde.

Council invites our community's feedback on the proposed pedestrian and cycle link upgrades.

What is proposed for Carara Reserve?

The Green Links Masterplan initially proposed a pathway along Sydney Water owned land next to the north-eastern side of Carara Reserve. However, the proposal has now been revised and the pathway will go through the eastern side of Carara Reserve instead.

The new path will be three-metres wide and allow for both pedestrians and cyclists. It will include lighting for safety and accessibility, and follow the park's topography. The light fixtures would be 5.5 metres high on a six-metre black powder-coated pole, spaced approximately 20 metres apart.

Other proposed features include:

  • a scenic rest stop overlooking the reserve
  • a second looping footpath leading to the scenic rest stop and forming a central open green space
  • additional planting to enhance the existing landscape, creating a holistic park environment
  • a new rest stop near the Goodwin Street entry, including a bike repair station, drinking fountain, and relocated seating.

Additionally, there are further plans for a future stage of the Green Links Masterplan implementation at the reserve, including:

  • a fitness area near the Goodwin Street entry, in a location that has better sightlines and closer access to the existing playground and active area of the park
  • new road crossing to Goodwin Street.

What is proposed for Benson Lane?

Benson Lane will be widened to six-metres, and includes new kerb and gutter, road resurfacing, pedestrian footpath, on-road cycling line marking, verge, and street lighting.

What other upgrades are proposed as part of this work?

The plans include a new 1.2 metre wide footpath along Falconer Street, at the Benson Street intersection, and a new pram ramp.

A three-metre wide shared user path is also proposed along Mondial Place into Carara Reserve.

Next Steps

Following the Have Your Say period, Council will consider the feedback received which will help inform the finalisation of the plans.

Work on the upgrades is expected to occur from October 2026.

Further information will be available closer to the start of the work.
