City of Ryde Council meeting summary - 28 June 2022

Council held its latest Ordinary meeting on 28 June 2022. The following is a summary of the outcomes from the meeting:

Morning tea for Australia Day honour recipients

Council congratulated Karen Waud OAM and Mervyn Whiting OAM on their 2022 Australia Day honours. Ms Waud was awarded with an Order of Australia Medal for service to sport, while Mr Whiting was awarded an Order of Australia Medal for service to veterans and their families as well as to the community. 

Council will stage a morning tea for Ms Waud and Mr Whiting to celebrate their achievements.

Awards received by City of Ryde and staff

Council acknowledged a number of awards that the City of Ryde organisation recently received and congratulated staff on their contribution to each award.

T.G. Millner Fields

The City of Ryde will take the steps necessary to secure T.G. Millner Fields as green open space. A planning proposal has been submitted by T.G. Millner’s landowners seeking to amend the Ryde Local Environmental Plan 2014 and rezone the land from RE2 Private Recreation to part R2 Low Density Residential and part RE1 Public Recreation.

Donation to earthquake victims in Afghanistan

Council will donate $10,000 to assist the humanitarian efforts being undertaken in Afghanistan’s Paktika province following a 6.1 magnitude earthquake that struck on 22 June 2022.

Four-Year Delivery Program 2022-2026

Council adopted the Four-Year Delivery Program 2022-2026, including the One Year Operational Plan 2022/23, which provides an overview of the City of Ryde’s directions, priorities, projects and budget overview. This also included a rate cut for the average residential ratepayer in the City of Ryde.

Local Government Remuneration Tribunal determination

Council resolved to not adopt a two percent increase to Mayoral and Councillor fees.

Councillor superannuation

Council authorised the payment of a superannuation contribution for the Mayor and Councillors who provide a nominated account, in accordance with the Local Government Act 1993.

Planning Proposal to rezone land

A planning proposal that seeks to rezone the former Marsden High School site in West Ryde will be submitted to the Department of Planning and Environment for gateway determination. The rezoning will facilitate the relocation of the existing netball courts at Meadowbank to the former Marsden High School site.

2022 Sportsground amenities audit

An audit of all existing sportsground amenities in the City of Ryde was received and noted by Council.

Management of Christie Park synthetic fields

Council will undertake an expression of interest process for a community facility lease of Christie Park 1 and 2 synthetic fields in Macquarie Park.

Ryde Traffic Committee – May 2022

The recommendations from the Ryde Traffic Committee meeting held in May 2022 were endorsed by Council, with the exception of a recommendation to remove a Loading Zone on Hillview Lane in Eastwood, which was deferred.

Road safety concerns on Higginbotham Road in Ryde

Council staff will meet with the residents of 72 – 80 Higginbotham Road in Ryde to discuss concerns about road safety in the area.

Council rebate – Hiring of turf wickets for 2021/22 summer season

Due to the impact of COVID-19 and adverse weather, Council will consider a rebate or credit of 45 percent on the Northern District Cricket Association's hiring of turf wickets for the 2021/22 season.

Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal 2022

Council will donate $2,500 to the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal 2022. In addition, Council will sponsor a Charity Golf Day at North Ryde Golf Club with all proceeds going to the Red Shield Appeal.

Climate Change advocacy

Council will write to the Federal Government alerting it to the Ryde Youth Council’s advocacy for stronger climate action and encourage it to consider policies which aim to ensure global warming does not increase above two degrees at the turn of the century.

Safe launching platform for kayaks at Wharf Road Boat Ramp

Council will liaise with Transport for NSW (Maritime) to improve the safety and accessibility of the Wharf Road Boat Ramp in Melrose Park, and permit kayakers to safely launch from the unused northern section of the jetty.

Pedestrian safety on Cressy Road in East Ryde

Council will liaise with residents and the school community at Ryde East Public School regarding the safety of students crossing Cressy Road at the Twin Road intersection in East Ryde.

Advocating for change to the National Construction Code

Council will forward a submission to the Australian Building Codes Board's consultation on Stage 1 of the National Construction Code 2022 calling on it to adopt recommendations from the Climate Council’s ‘Tents to Castles’ report.

Clr Jerome Laxale congratulated

Clr Jerome Laxale was congratulated by Council for being elected as the new Federal Member for Bennelong. Council also extended its gratitude to all candidates who contested the election.

The next Ordinary Council meeting is scheduled to take place on Tuesday 26 July 2022.
