5 Million Trees for Greater Sydney

Increasing Greater Sydney’s tree canopy to 40% by 2030 is one of the NSW Premier’s Priorities, supported by the Five Million Trees initiative. Through this program, the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment provides grants to councils to fund tree planting in streets, parks, and other public spaces.

Health and Wellbeing Benefits of Trees

The “urban forest” the network of trees across streets, parks, and private gardens plays a vital role in making our suburbs healthier, greener, and more liveable. Tree-lined streets improve neighbourhood character, enhance biodiversity, and foster a sense of connection and wellbeing.

Research has shown that trees provide measurable health benefits, including:

  • Cleaner air through improved air quality and reduced airborne pollutants
  • Lower urban heat, reducing risks of heat stress and skin cancer
  • Reduced incidence of cardiovascular disease
  • Improved mental health, with lower stress and higher happiness levels

Greening Our City Grants

The Greening Our City grant program, delivered under Five Million Trees, co-funds tree planting projects across Greater Sydney. The City of Ryde has already benefited from this program, planting hundreds of street and park trees to expand our urban canopy.
