TG MILLNER UPDATE

At the Council Meeting on 23 April 2024, it was resolved that I write to the NSW Premier the Hon Chris Minns MP detailing City of Ryde’s disappointment around the State Government’s decision not to grant the proposed acquisition notice (PAN) for us to compulsory acquire TG Millner Field.

The Premier should intervene and freeze any further action on this decision, especially given the conflicting signals we have received from the State Government on this vitally important matter, as I pointed out here last week.

Council has provisioned $15 million for the purchase of this site, which will keep it as essential open space and save it from being turned into a housing development. The NSW Government should identify the value of the site rather than just tell us we cannot afford to buy it.

I will also be writing to the Federal member of Bennelong, Jerome Laxale MP and the NSW State Member for Ryde, Jordan Lane MP seeking their commitments to preserve TG Millner as open space, a position they both supported as former Mayors of Ryde.

Further, we will seek assistance from the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure to prepare a bespoke State Environmental Planning Policy (SEPP) for TG Millner that guarantees the retention of public open space on the site.

Rest assured; our fight is far from over.

FORUM SUCCESS

I want to thank those residents of Ryde who attended the inaugural Mayor’s Public Forum on 22 April for making this exercise in transparency and engagement a great success.

During the evening I was able to talk about the current state of Council’s major projects – the fight to preserve employment in the Macquarie Park Innovation District, the status of the civic centre development at 1 Devlin Street, and our important ongoing works in Meadowbank.

I was also asked some interesting questions from the floor about the Buffalo Creek catchment area and our future plans for TG Millner.

It was a wonderful opportunity to engage directly with you and I’m already looking forward to the next Mayor’s Public Forum. Stay tuned for details.

BANDS BATTLE

Live music is alive and well in Ryde if our annual Battle of the Bands competition is any indication.

I was thoroughly impressed by the originality and energy of the young musicians who performed on the Lachlan’s Line Auditorium stage on 17 April.

Congratulations to the worthy winners Deaf Perception – whose four members are ex-students of Ryde Secondary College – and to the talented runners-up Rosemary, and Freak.

I predict bright, exciting futures for them all.

Yours Sincerely,
