Open Day - 200th Birthday of St Annes Ryde, Anglican Church

This year, St Anne's Anglican Church marks a remarkable milestone — 200 years since its beginnings on Church Street, Ryde. What started life as a simple schoolhouse in 1826 became St Anne's Church in 1838, once a new schoolhouse was built nearby to take its place. A chancel and bell tower were later added, and the building was consecrated by Bishop Barker in 1870.

St Anne's is the third oldest Anglican church in Australia, and its story is woven into the story of Ryde itself. Its historic graveyard is also the resting place of Maria Ann Sherwood Smith, in whose orchard the Granny Smith apple was first discovered — a small but lovely piece of local and national history.

The community is warmly invited to join the celebrations over the weekend of 22–23 August:

There will be lots happening on the weekend of 22-23 August as we celebrate the 200th anniversary of our historic church.

On Saturday 22 August from 10am-3pm, there will be St Annes Open Day up in the historic church with recitals, talks and historic items on display. And this will lead into our Commemorative Services on Sunday 23 August at 7:30am and 10:30am. (7:30am Communion, and a 10:30am combined English & Mandarin service.)
