Food Business Registration
Any business that sells food to the public — including cafes, restaurants, mobile food vans, market stalls, and temporary event vendors — that sell directly to the consumer, is considered a retail food business and must meet the legal requirements under the Food Act 2003 NSW.
All retail food businesses within the City of Ryde area must notify the Council of their business details. This includes:
- Opening a new business
- Closing down or stopping trading
- Moving business location
- Changing ABN or proprietor details.
Please note that if you intend to trade under a Trust, the details of the Trustee must be provided, this may be an individual or a company.
Businesses Required to Register
All retail food businesses are required to notify Council prior to commencing operation. This applies (but is not limited) to:
- Restaurants, cafes & takeaways
- Bakeries
- Seafood retailers
- Supermarkets
- Fruit and vegetable shops
- Grocery/ convenience stores
- Petrol stations
- Caters selling directly to consumers
- Childcare centres cooking and preparing food
- Mobile food vans
- Home based businesses
Requirements Prior to Registering
Before submitting a registration form, businesses must ensure that they have obtained appropriate development consent for the operation of their food business.
This is particularly important for:
- Home-based food businesses, and;
- Businesses operating from a premises not previously used for food preparation or sale.
Establishing your planning approval helps ensure the premises meets minimum food safety standards and that it is suitable for food handling and preparation.
